Washington Commanders vs New England Patriots Match Player Stats (Aug 8, 2025)

TreVeyon Henderson caught the opening kickoff at the goal line and did not stop moving for 100 yards. Fourteen seconds into the first preseason game of the Mike Vrabel era at New England, the Patriots led 7-0 and Washington had not run a single offensive play. By the final whistle at Gillette Stadium, the score read 48-18, the biggest points total New England had produced in a preseason game since a 50-10 win over Jacksonville in the 2021 season. The night started with the unveiling of a 12-foot bronze statue of Tom Brady outside the stadium. What followed kept the crowd of 64,628 loud for most of it.

One number shapes every line of this box score: Washington rested 30 players. Jayden Daniels did not play. Neither did Deebo Samuel, Von Miller, Bobby Wagner, or backup quarterback Marcus Mariota, who did not make the trip with a leg strain. Dan Quinn, coming off a 12-5 season and an NFC Championship Game appearance in 2024, kept his core unit off the field. Most of what Washington showed on August 8, 2025 came from the lower end of their roster. New England also held out cornerback Christian Gonzalez, wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and defensive tackle Christian Barmore, among others. But Drake Maye started, Will Campbell and Jared Wilson took snaps on the offensive line, and most of the projected starting offense played the first two series before giving way to the reserves. That difference in approach is the lens through which these player stats should be read.

Washington’s 13 penalties for 98 yards, against New England’s two for 15, defined their side of the box score as much as anything the Commanders did between the lines. Dan Quinn was direct about it postgame: “All three phases I thought it was sloppy tonight.” Sam Hartman completed fewer than half his passes and threw an interception; Josh Johnson was sharper in the second half but also gave one away to Jordan Polk. Washington’s leading rusher was Demetric Felton with 42 yards on six carries, a stat line that reflected who was sitting out rather than the state of the running game under Quinn.

On the New England side, Ben Wooldridge finished with the best passer rating on the field at 138.2, completing nine of twelve attempts for 132 yards and a touchdown against a secondary without most of Washington’s projected starters. Henderson totaled 130 combined yards on four offensive touches in just seven snaps, including his 18-yard run and three catches for 12 yards alongside the 100-yard return. Efton Chism III drew eight targets and caught six for 50 yards and a score. Maye’s night had moments in both directions: a strip-sack fumble forced by Jer’Zhan Newton on his first series, recovered by Jacob Martin at the New England 30, and a composed eight-play touchdown drive on his second, capped by a 5-yard scoring run. “I’ve got to do my part protecting the football,” Maye said after the game.

The score was 48-18 and it was, in every relevant sense, a preseason game between unequal groups. What the Washington Commanders vs New England Patriots player stats from August 8, 2025 actually show is a snapshot of two rosters at their farthest point from game-ready, with Washington’s further away than New England’s. The numbers are real. The context behind them is just as important.

I've been arguing about sport since I was old enough to have a bad opinion about it. Growing up in Newcastle will do that to you. I started Match Player Stats in May 2026 because I was tired of reading match coverage that confused volume with depth. Good-looking articles that told you nothing you couldn't have worked out from the scoreline. I cover the NFL, NBA, MLB, cricket, and football on this site, and the only rule I've ever held to is a straightforward one: if the stats don't support what you're writing, you're writing the wrong thing. That's the whole editorial policy, really.
