New Orleans moved the ball and kept giving it away. That was the short version of the Saints’ 27-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium on August 10, 2025. The Saints outgained the Chargers 300 yards to 248 and ran nine more plays, but they lost the ball three times, and Los Angeles turned those mistakes into 18 points.
The game opened the 2025 preseason for New Orleans and counted as the Chargers’ second exhibition, after their Hall of Fame Game win over Detroit. Los Angeles rested Justin Herbert, while New Orleans, with its starting job still open, split the snaps among Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough, and Jake Haener. Chargers rookie cornerback Eric Rogers made the night’s biggest play. He read a Shough sideline throw in the third quarter, came down with a diving interception, got to his feet, and took it back 43 yards for a touchdown, then picked off Haener again in the fourth. Trey Lance scrambled in for a 5-yard score and led Los Angeles in rushing with 48 yards, while Shough answered his pick-six with a 54-yard touchdown pass to Mason Tipton.

The final score read closer than the night went for New Orleans. The Saints outgained Los Angeles by 52 yards, ran nine more plays, and held the ball for just over 31 minutes, then gave most of that back with two interceptions and a lost fumble, and came away empty on both trips inside the red zone. Eighteen of the Chargers’ 27 points came directly off those giveaways, and Rogers’ 43-yard return was the biggest swing of the game. For a Saints offense breaking in a new staff and a Chargers side still holding out its starters, the box score explained the night more honestly than the final margin did.
I've been arguing about sport since I was old enough to have a bad opinion about it. Growing up in Newcastle will do that to you. I started Match Player Stats in May 2026 because I was tired of reading match coverage that confused volume with depth. Good-looking articles that told you nothing you couldn't have worked out from the scoreline. I cover the NFL, NBA, MLB, cricket, and football on this site, and the only rule I've ever held to is a straightforward one: if the stats don't support what you're writing, you're writing the wrong thing. That's the whole editorial policy, really.
