Tagovailoa went 7-0 against New York as Miami’s starter, according to the official Dolphins recap. His two touchdown passes both went to Waller on red zone fades. This marked Tagovailoa’s first game without a turnover in 2025.
Fields targeted receivers 7.7 yards downfield on average while Tagovailoa’s throws went 5.8 yards deep. The Jets quarterback held the ball 3.68 seconds per dropback compared to 2.62 for Tagovailoa. Fields pushed downfield more. Tagovailoa got the ball out faster on quick routes.

Fields scored on a 43-yard scramble in the third quarter. Defenders closed in after the snap, he reversed direction, then ran untouched down the left sideline to cut Miami’s lead to 17-10.
“It’s frustrating. It’s really that simple,” Fields said after the loss, per Pro Football Reference. “But at the end of the day, if we look at it from a far perspective, we have three games that were lost by one score.”
De’Von Achane carried 20 times for 99 yards and scored from nine yards out in the third quarter. Through 32 career games, he now has 15 rushing touchdowns and 10 receiving scores. Only Chuck Foreman and Kareem Hunt reached those totals that quickly since 1970.
Breece Hall gained 81 yards on 14 carries. The Jets ran for 7.0 yards per attempt as a team. Miami rushed for 4.0. New York moved the ball better on the ground but lost the turnover battle.

Wilson hauled in a 23-yard touchdown with 1:49 left in the fourth quarter. Fields threw a jump ball to the back corner of the end zone. Wilson beat his defender to the spot and secured it. Fields then ran in the two-point conversion to make it 27-21, but Miami recovered the onside kick.
Rookie tight end Mason Taylor had five receptions for 65 yards, both career highs. His 27-yard grab in the third quarter was the longest reception by a tight end Monday night.
Waller played his first game since Week 18 of the 2023 season. Three receptions, two touchdowns. Both scores came in the red zone where he used his size to box out shorter defensive backs.
“It’s a lot to process, a lot emotionally, to be honest,” Waller said after the game, according to NFL.com. “Very exciting. Just to be out there the whole day, yeah. A little bit of fear, a little bit of everything.”
Tyreek Hill had six receptions for 67 yards before a third-quarter knee injury. Tests revealed a dislocated knee with torn ACL and multiple ligaments, ending his season. Miami led 10-3 when Hill left the game.

Jordyn Brooks recorded 18 total tackles with 15 solo stops to lead both teams.
Tyrel Dodson made the biggest defensive play. Fourth-and-5 from the Miami 36 in the second quarter. The Jets had driven from their 26 into field goal range. Dodson came on a delayed blitz, hit Fields as he released, and the ball came loose. Jaelan Phillips recovered at the 36.
Three Turnovers Decided The Game
First Quarter, 3:06 remaining: Allen took a handoff at the Miami 6 and headed for the end zone. Jack Jones came from the side and punched the ball out at the 4-yard line. Minkah Fitzpatrick recovered. Miami then drove 96 yards in 15 plays for a touchdown and a 10-0 lead.
Second Quarter, 4:16 remaining: Fourth-and-5 from the Miami 36. Dodson’s strip sack. Phillips recovered. The Jets had chosen to go for it rather than attempt a field goal.
Third Quarter, 14:53 remaining: Williams returned the opening kickoff of the second half. Dante Trader Jr. hit him, forced a fumble, and recovered at the Jets 36. Six plays later, Waller scored his second touchdown for a 17-3 Miami lead.
The Jets and Dolphins both entered Week 4 without forcing a single turnover through three games. Miami forced three Monday night. New York remains the only team in the past 20 seasons to start 0-4 without a takeaway, according to NFL.com’s recap.

The Jets gained 104 more total yards than Miami and had more first downs. New York converted third downs at a higher rate and gained more yards per play (7.1 to 5.4).
None of that mattered.
New York committed 13 penalties for 101 yards. False starts stopped drives. Holding calls negated first downs. Wilson had a third-quarter touchdown erased by offensive pass interference.
“Very disappointing, very disappointing,” head coach Aaron Glenn said after the game. “There is no way you can win any game with 13 penalties and three turnovers. It just can’t happen.”
All three Jets fumbles led directly to Miami scoring drives.
Red Zone Results
| Team | Trips | TDs | FGs | Scoring Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dolphins | 4 | 3 | 1 | 100% |
| Jets | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0% |
Miami scored on every red zone possession. Three touchdowns, one field goal. Waller had two scores. Achane ran in the other.
The Jets made two trips inside the 20. Allen fumbled at the 4. Fields got stripped from the 36. Both possessions ended with turnovers instead of points.
Kicking Stats
| Player | Team | FG | Long | XP | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nick Folk | NYJ | 2/2 | 58 | 1/1 | 7 |
| Riley Patterson | MIA | 2/2 | 47 | 3/3 | 9 |
Folk made a career-long 58-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to cut Miami’s lead to 10-3. He also connected from 50 yards in the fourth quarter.
Riley Patterson went 9-for-9 on extra points through four games and made all four field goal attempts through Miami’s first month.
After The Loss
Miami snapped an 0-3 start with their first win. The Dolphins have now won 10 straight home games against the Jets. New York hasn’t won at Hard Rock Stadium since 2015.
The Jets dropped to 0-4 for the first time since 2020. Three losses have come by one score. Glenn’s team faces Dallas next week.
The January 5 matchup between these teams ended 32-20 Jets when Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdowns. Fields totaled 307 yards Monday night with two scores, but the three fumbles at the goal line, on fourth down, and on the kickoff return were too costly.
“My confidence is not going to wane not one bit,” Glenn said. “We’re not going to waver on the things we’ve been talking about, how we’ve got to win games. We’ve just got to do a better job of doing those things.”
Hill’s season-ending injury changes Miami’s offensive structure. Waddle becomes the primary receiver. Waller proved he can still win in the red zone, but replacing Hill’s production across an entire season requires more than one productive game from a tight end returning from retirement.
Braelon Allen suffered a knee injury on a second-quarter kickoff return and didn’t return. Michael Carter II left before halftime with a concussion. Both teams lost key players.
“At the end of the day, what do you want your legacy to be?” Wilson asked reporters. “When I look back at my time, man, we gotta go now. We gotta have it this week.”
The Jets outgained Miami by 104 yards and converted more third downs. Fields completed 74% of his passes without an interception. The offensive line allowed just two sacks. New York moved the ball effectively on both the ground and through the air.
Miami capitalized on every red zone opportunity while New York went scoreless on both trips inside the 20. The Dolphins forced three turnovers after going three games without one. Tagovailoa avoided mistakes for the first time in 2025. Red zone efficiency and turnovers made the difference.
